PREGNANCY AND IMMUNE FUNCTION IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Status:
Suspended

Sponsors:

Type of Study and Brief Description:
This is a study that is designed to monitor immune function before, during and after pregnancy in women with MS. It involves donation of a small blood sample once before pregnancy (if possible), once during each trimester of pregnancy, and twice after delivery, at 6 weeks and 6 months post-partum. Disease activity will also be assessed by a neurological examination. No treatment is being administered.

Background:
It has been well-documented that women with multiple sclerosis are less likely to have attacks or worsening of disease during pregnancy, but are at higher risk for MS relapses or worsening after delivery. We are trying to determine what is responsible for these changes by monitoring the function of immune cells in laboratory studies. The hope is to apply the knowledge gained from these studies to the development of new treatments for all MS patients.
